Carper Highlights IC4A/ECAC Championships for RMU

Senior earns silver in the javelin and is one of six Colonials to earn All-East Coast honors

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's track & field team continued its 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J., finishing 24th out of 57 schools. The Colonials finished with 16 points.

RMU was led by senior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona), who claimed silver in the javelin thanks to toss of 70.28 meters (230'7"). Stefano Nardini of Hampton won the individual title in the event, finishing just ahead of Carper at 70.39 meters (230'11").

Also earning All-East Coast accolades for Robert Morris this weekend was junior Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) as well as RMU's 4x800-meter relay team.

Njenga finished sixth in the triple jump thanks to a distance of 14.88 meters (48'10"), while the 4x800-meter relay squad that featured senior Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills), sophomore Drew Gerberich (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO) and seniors Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) and Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) finished fourth with a time of 7:30.70, a new school record.

RMU's 4x800-meter relay squad qualified for the finals by finishing second in its heat with a time of 7:35.42, which stood as the school record in the event until being broken in the finals. On the 2014 season, the relay squad has posted each of the top three times in school history in the event.

Also competing for the Colonials this weekend was senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic), who finished 12th in the shot put with a toss of 16.84 meters (55'3").

The RMU 4x400-meter relay squad earned sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 3:26.26. The team featured senior Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area), junior Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg), sophomore Mark Ayitey (East Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and junior Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson).
