Moon Township, Pa. – Senior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) of the Robert Morris University men's track & field team needed just one throw Thursday to claim the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round individual championship in the javelin, breaking his own school record in the event with a toss of 73.09 meters (239'9") at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

Thanks to this performance, Carper advances to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year in the event and becomes the first student-athlete in program history to win an individual title at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Carper was seeded as the No. 7 student-athlete in flight three, and his throw of 73.09 meters easily cleared the previous best mark of 71.46 meters (234'5") that was thrown by Tomas Guerra of Western Kentucky.

Guerra ended up third overall, with Raymond Dykstra of Kentucky finishing second with a toss of 72.16 meters (236'9") he accomplished in round three. Rounding out the top five was Jay Stell of Navy and McLean Lipschutz of Monmouth, who posted marks of 71.35 meters (234'1") and 70.38 meters (230'11"), respectively.

In school history, Carper now owns each of the top 10 distances in the javelin, becoming the first student-athlete of either gender to possess each of the top 10 marks in program history in an event.

Carper will take part in the 2014 NCAA Championships June 11-14, 2014, in Eugene, Oregon.
