Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's track & field team opened the 2014 Northeast Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island by compiling 34 points Saturday to rank third among 10 schools.

Sacred Heart will enter the final day of competition Sunday tops in the rankings with 54 points, followed by Wagner with 36. Following the Colonials and rounding out the field are Central Connecticut State (32), Saint Francis U. (29), Bryant (17), LIU Brooklyn (12), Fairleigh Dickinson (7), Mount St. Mary's (7) and St. Francis Brooklyn (6).

Highlighting the first day of action for RMU was the 4x800-meter relay squad, which claimed gold with a time of 7:45.00. The team consisted of seniors Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills), freshman Drew Gerberich (Myerstown, Pa. / ELCO) and senior Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport) and edged out Wagner (7:45.71) for the title.

In the throws, senior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) finished second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw. He posted a toss of 16.43 meters (53'11") in the shot put to earn silver and garner All-NEC Second Team accolades while finishing with a final tally of 50.64 meters (166'2") in the hammer. The two events allowed Mitchell to score 14 points for Robert Morris.

Also scoring in the field events for the Colonials were juniors Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) and Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) in the long jump, as Witmyer finished sixth with a leap of 6.76 meters (22'2.25"), while Njenga claimed seventh at 6.62 meters (21'8.75"). In the pole vault, senior Chantz Wain (Finleyville, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) finished seventh with a leap of 4.20 meters (13'9.25").

In the track events, freshman Ryan Hertzog (Glenville, Pa. / South Western) earned a sixth-place finish for RMU to score in the 10,000-meter run thanks to a time of 33:48.67.

Sunday's action for the 2014 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships begins at 9:00 a.m. with the men's high jump and continues with the women's discus at 9:30 a.m. The track events kick off at Noon with the 3,000-meter steeplechase for both the men and women.
