Colonials Drop Two at Panther Invitational

Robert Morris falls in its opener to Milwaukee in three sets, then later on in the evening to Miami (Ohio) in four sets

Milwaukee, Wisc. – The Robert Morris University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the Panther Invitational, held in Milwaukee, Wisc. at the J. Martin Klotsche Center.

Robert Morris (0-2, 0-0 NEC) opened up the invitational by taking on the host school Milwaukee (2-0, 0-0 Horizon), and then battled Miami (Ohio) (2-0, 0-0 MAC) later on in the evening. The Colonials fell in straight sets to the Panthers (16-25, 13-25, 23-25), and took the second frame of the match against the Redhawks (11-25, 25-22, 12-25, 19-25).

Sophomore outside hitter Arden Fisher led the way for the Colonials in the first match with her first of two double-doubles. Fisher tallied a team-high 11 kills and 12 digs, and also paced RMU in points with 12.0.

Freshman setter Brianna Frakes made her collegiate debut in the match against Milwaukee as she dished out a team-leading 16 assists.

The Colonials battled back from deficits of 6-1 and 18-11 in the third set against the defending Horizon League champions, eventually knotting it up at 20 thanks to kills by seniors Erica Robb and Sydney Sizemore. Another kill by Robb and an attack error pulled RMU within one at 24-23, but the Panthers took the final point to complete the sweep.

Junior middle blocker Kristin Thompson hit at a .615 clip against Miami (Ohio), tallying nine kills and just one error on 13 attempts. Her efficient effort was coupled by double-doubles from sophomore April Krivoniak (10 kills, 12 digs) and Fisher (13 kills, 10 digs).

Frakes collected the first double-double of her career in the evening tilt, tallying 27 assists and 10 digs. Senior libero Melissa Bograd added a team-high 13 digs for the Colonials.

Senior middle blocker Becky Jay and Krivoniak registered five block assists each against the Redhawks.

RMU fell behind twice by three points in the second set, but responded with big runs of its own to tie the match at one. Trailing 19-16, the Colonials used kills by Thompson, Krivoniak, and Fisher to finish the set on a 9-3 run.

Robert Morris returns to the court tomorrow afternoon as it completes its slate of games at the Panther Invitational with a match against North Dakota State. The meeting between the Colonials and Bison is set for a noon start from the J. Martin Klotsche Center
