RMU Shatters Scoring Record to Win Red Flash Invite

Johnstown, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's golf team won the Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational for the second consecutive year carding a three-round total of 873 at the 6,734-yard, par-70 layout at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa. It is the third victory of the 2014-15 season and the team's second in as many weeks.

The Colonials rode two solid first round scores to hold off Bucknell for first place. RMU posted scores of 288 and 286 Monday, two of the top eight rounds in team history, before accumulating a 299 in Tuesday's final round. The Bison shot 877 while Humber finished third at 892. Saint Francis U. and Wagner (893) tied for fourth followed by Iona (894), Saint Francis "B" (932), Bucknell "B" (953) and Pitt Johnstown (1,002).

The team's 873 total is the best 54-hole tournament score in team history, shattering by six strokes the previous team mark of 879 set at the 2009 Bucknell Invitational. To further illustrate the quality of play by the Colonials, all five players three-round totals are in the top-25 54-hole scores in program history.

Santiago Mejia topped a quartet of Colonials in the event's top-10. The senior from Colombia saved his best for last, carding an even par 70 Tuesday to finish second, two strokes behind medalist Barret McCarthy of Humber College. Mejia shot 72 in each of the first two rounds for a 214 (+4) total, the third lowest 54-hole number in team history.

Garrett Browning slipped slightly in Tuesday's action, a final round of 77 giving him a 219 total that was still good enough to put him in a tie for seventh. The junior shot 72 in the opening round and carded an even par round of 70 Monday afternoon. Matt Gurska and Ryan Prokay each needed 220 strokes to round the circuit three times, putting them in a ninth-place tie. Gurska posted rounds of 73-72-75 while Prokay went 72-72-77.

Dan Maier wrapped up the five scoring players for the Colonials with a 225 and a 19th place finish. He sandwiched his best round, a 72, in the middle of an opening round 75 and final round 78. Mike McMorrow was playing as an individual and tied for 20th. His best round came Monday morning with a 72 before carding scores of 76 and 78 for a 226.

The Colonials will take off the next two weeks prior to the Northeast Conference Championships May 1-3 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
