Pittsburgh, Pa. - The
Robert Morris University men's hockey team announces that
Kody Van Rentergem has been promoted from Hockey Operations Coordinator to Assistant Coach.
Van Rentergem, 28, focused on video analysis, team logistics and mentoring goalies in his previous position, where he spent three years. In his new upgraded role, he will continue to work with Colonials goaltenders, but also contribute significantly to recruiting efforts and assist Head Coach Derek Schooley on power-play optimization."Kody has been a valuable member of the staff for the last three successful seasons and he will seemlessly step into this assistant role," Schooley said. "His credentials and teaching skills are excellent. He knows our conference, university, program and players like the back of his hand. He has done a very good job and will continue to do so in his new role."
A former NCAA Division III goaltender, Van Rentergem posted the second-best save percentage and the third-best goals-against average in the history of the SUNY Fredonia program. Following that, the native of Redcliff, Alberta, took on a coaching position for the Blue Devils, where he assisted with goaltenders and recruiting.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity," said Van Rentergem, who joins Schooley and Associate Head Coach
Mark Workman on the coaching staff. "Derek, Mark and I have worked together for three years and I look forward to continuing to build on our recent success. It's a very exciting time for the program and I'm grateful to be a part of it.
"My fiancee Megan and I have called Pittsburgh home for a couple years now. The fact that we get to stay home while getting this opportunity is fantastic."
Van Rentergem's promotion comes in the wake of former Associate Head Coach Matt Nicholson
departing to lead the Amarillo Bulls of the North American Hockey League.
"I'm very happy for Matt," Van Rentergem said. "I worked very closely with him and learned a lot over the past three years."
Coming off a program-record 24 wins and its first regular-season title in 2014-15, RMU will begin its 12th Division I campaign this October. For the full schedule, including the fourth-annual Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center,
