Pittsburgh, Pa. – In an effort to raise awareness for an important cause that affects the lives of many, the
Robert Morris University women's hockey team will host its annual Skate for the Cure weekend in conjunction with its upcoming College Hockey America series against Lindenwood on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 30 at 3:05 p.m. at 84 Lumber Arena.
As a team bonding event prior to the official kick-off of the 2015-16 season, the Colonials partnered with the
Pink Steel Dragon Boat Racing organization and hit the water with the team of local breast cancer survivors to learn firsthand lessons on teamwork, communication, commitment and perseverance. To thank the ladies of Pink Steel, the Colonials are dedicating this years' Skate for the Cure efforts to the Pittsburgh-based competitive dragon boat racing team.
The Pink Steel mission is
"to expand and enrich the journey through Breast Cancer Survivorship through participation in the sport of Dragon Boat racing. We focus on team building in an environment of mutual support that fosters joy, vitality, continued hope and wellness through supportive team fitness. We encourage survivors to strive for a life full of possibilities and to inspire all not just to survive, but to thrive." Representatives of the RMU women's hockey team will be selling t-shirts for $15 and cupcakes all weekend long prior to and during both games. Various items will also be raffled off with proceeds going to Pink Steel.
Friday night's game will feature a ceremonial puck drop to honor various members of the Pink Steel Team. Afterward, the ladies of Pink Steel will be set up at a table inside the arena to chat with fans who are interested in learning more about their organization.
Fans can also look forward to joining the Colonials on the ice after Friday night's game to skate with the members of the 2015-16 squad. Bring your own skates and skate for free or rent a pair through the Island Sports Center.
