Pittsburgh, Pa. - Former
Robert Morris University men's hockey forward Furman South '12 has been hired as an official in the National Hockey League. South is a referee and will join the NHL as an official this fall, splitting time between the NHL and the AHL, where he served as an official during the 2015-16 season.
South, 28, played for the Colonials from 2008-2012, scoring 11 goals and posting 20 assists.
Prior to the AHL, the Pittsburgh native South, has officiated in USA Hockey's Officiating Development Program (ODP), and has experience as an official in the USHL, NAHL, and SPHL.
South officiated at the National Hockey League Prospects Camp in Traverse City, Michigan and attended the National Hockey League Officiating Combine in Buffalo, New York, prior to being named an NHL referee.
"I am very proud of Furman," said Robert Morris head coach
Derek Schooley. "He has the chance to be the first Colonial on NHL ice in a regular season game."

According to
ScoutingTheRefs.com, South will referee wearing the number 44.
Robert Morris University men's hockey opens the 2016-17 season with an exhibition on October 1 at 84 Lumber Arena.
