The Capsule
Rolling into the season's final stretch with a seven-game winning streak, Robert Morris is set to face a red-hot Mount St. Mary's team on Monday, Feb. 13. The Colonials and Mountaineers have the two longest winning streaks in the Northeast Conference, as Mount St. Mary's upped its to four with a victory at Saint Francis U on Saturday. With that win, RMU now sits in a three-way tie for first place in the NEC, deadlocked with both the Red Flash and Sacred Heart.
The Series vs. Mount St. Mary's
Despite trailing in the all-time series, 33-24, Robert Morris has been dominant as of late, winning 18 of the last 21 meetings. That includes a current streak of eight consecutive wins, which began Jan. 26, 2013 in a narrow 61-59 decision at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Mount St. Mary's sits a game outside the top four of the NEC with a 7-6 conference mark. The Mountaineers' current four-game run has come against the league's top six, including victories against Sacred Heart and at Saint Francis U. Junior center Caroline Hummell is the team's leading scorer at 10.7 points per game, while senior guard Alexis Carter has come off the bench to pace Mount in rebounds (7.0) and is second in points (9.4). Nine players who have played 20 or more games are averaging 10-plus minutes, making Mount one of the deeper teams in the conference.
Â
The Previous Meeting
The Colonials' free throw shooting made up for a lackluster performance from beyond the arc (2-of-14) as it converted 12-of-15 attempts at the chalk to lock up a 50-44 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Jan. 28. RMU owned a 40-32 advantage on the glass, thanks to an 11-4 edge in the opening stanza.
Anna Niki Stamolamprou led all scorers with 15 points, while
Rebeca Navarro did a little bit of everything as she tallied nine points, four assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
Last Time Out
Robert Morris picked up its second season sweep in as many games, downing Wagner by a score of 74-41 Saturday on Senior Day. The Colonials used a 37-16 difference in the second half to roll towards a comfortable victory, thanks to a 46.8 shooting performance (29-of-62) over 40 minutes.
Rebeca Navarro led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while
Anna Niki Stamolamprou and
Megan Smith added 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Â
Streakin'
Robert Morris is currently riding a seven-game winning streak, which is tied for the seventh longest in program history. This is the fourth time that the Colonials have reached seven consecutive wins, previously accomplishing the feat in 1979-80, 2008-09, and 2013-14. The school record for most consecutive wins came during 2007-08 season when RMU won 17 straight from Jan. 16 to March 16.
Â
Never Change
The Colonials have identified themselves as a strong defensive team in the past and this season is no different. RMU currently leads the NEC in scoring defense (57.9) and field goal defense (.376), and has held six teams to under 30 percent shooting - surpassing its total of four from both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns.
Â
In It to Win It
With its victory against Wagner on Saturday, Robert Morris clinched a spot in the 2017 NEC Tournament. The Colonials have now been a part of the league playoffs in 12 of the last 13 seasons and their 22nd NEC Tournament overall.
Â
Feelin' It
Senior guard
Anna Niki Stamolamprou is averaging a career-high 16.3 points per game in her final hurrah and recently surpassed Laura Lindak (1989-94) for second place on the program's all-time scoring list on Jan. 30 at Saint Francis U. Stamolamprou now has 1,675 career points and has tallied a per-game average of 14.3 points during her time in Colonial blue and white.
Â
The Iron Woman
Senior guard
Janee Brown has been a constant on the floor for Robert Morris in her career, appearing in all 122 games the Colonials have played since 2013-14. That mark is good for a tie for third all-time with Kelly Hartwell (2010-14) and is three shy of becoming the program record.
Â
Lift Off
First-year head coach
Charlie Buscaglia now owns the winningest debut head coaching season in program history as his 15-9 record surpassed Dan Swalga's 14-win campaign in 1978-79.
