Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University rowing team christened its 2017 season Saturday by taking part in the Murphy Cup, which was hosted by Temple University, in Philadelphia, Pa.
"This weekend was a great opportunity to start the spring season against some tough competition," head coach
Nelle Stahura said. "While we can always do better, I was pleased with the way that our crews handled the first race of the season, especially given their minimal time on the water so far this spring. We communicated some specific goals before race day and accomplished them all."

In its first action of the spring, the RMU Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:14.22. Serving as the coxswain was freshman
Kestra Harris, and joining her in the boat was junior
Kate Cecchi, senior
Tina Sahr, juniors
Lindsay Feltz and
Melissa Asaro, senior
Taylor Childers, sophomore
Grace Faye and seniors
Emily Engle-Young and
Katelyn Goodman.
In Varsity Four action, the Colonials finished with a time of 8:15.24. The boat consisted of freshman
Elizabeth Cottrell and sophomores
Sara Beth Johnson,
Kathryn Gossel and
Miriam Levenson, while sophomore
Sarah Heastings was the coxswain.
The Robert Morris Second Varsity Four boat saw freshman
Brittany Bell anchor the coxswain position, and she was joined by rookies
Nicole Olinger and
Kalyssa Pottgeiser, senior
Rebecca Fiscus and sophomore
Alyssa VanAuken. The boat finished with a time of 8:23.23.

RMU also had a pair of Novice Four boats compete in the Murphy Cup. The first boat featured Bell as the coxswain and also consisted of Pottgeiser, junior
Molly Falcone, sophomore
Hannah Daman and freshman
Sophie Carroll. The Colonials finished with a time of 8:41.26.
The second Novice Four boat crossed the finish line with a time of 9:02.42. Making up the boat was freshmen
Brianna Proctor and
Alexandra Stangle, senior
Rebekah Landers and Cottrell, while Harris was the coxswain.
"I think our novice student-athletes showed great determination and tenacity in their first spring race," assistant coach
Carol Schoenecker said. "They welcomed the challenge of racing multiple times against more experienced crews with resolve. We're excited to see their progress as the season continues."
Robert Morris continues its 2017 season Sunday, April 2, by taking part in the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Va.
