Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's hockey alumnus Furman South '12 is set to make his regular season officiating debut in the National Hockey League Thursday night as the Arizona Coyotes host the Vancouver Canucks.
South, a referee, played for the Colonials as a forward from 2008-2012, scoring 11 goals and posting 20 assists. South has been officiating in the American Hockey League over the last two seasons and was a referee in an NHL preseason game last fall.
South's NHL debut Thursday night will mark the first Robert Morris alum to make an appearance in an NHL regular season game. South wears #44.
South, a Pittsburgh native (Sewickley, Pa.), has officiated in the AHL, USA Hockey's Officiating Development Program (ODP), and has experience as an official in the USHL, NAHL, and SPHL.
"I'm very proud of Furman," said Robert Morris head coach
Derek Schooley. "He has worked hard at numerous levels and deserves this opportunity. Hopefully, he will be the first of many Colonials to be in the NHL in the future."

Robert Morris (22-12-4) wrapped up the 2016-17 campaign with its fourth 20-plus win season, each coming in the last five years. The Colonials finished as Atlantic Hockey conference runners-up after making the school's third appearance in the title game in the last four seasons. Robert Morris will graduate four seniors, losing one defenseman, and returning nearly 80-percent of its offense and two goaltenders for the 2017-18 season.
