Moon Township, Pa. – Artemis Spanou and Anna Niki Stamolamprou, graduates of Robert Morris University and former players on the women's basketball team, will be playing with the Greek Senior Women's National Team in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 2017 Eurobasket, which opens on Friday, June 16 in Prague.
Spanou (2010-14) and Stamolamprou (2013-17) are two of the most decorated players in Robert Morris program history, having each won the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year award in their respective senior campaigns. Both players helped lead the Colonials to NEC regular-season and Tournament championships, where they matched up against Notre Dame in the 2014 and 2017 NCAA Tournaments.
A three-time All-NEC First Team selection, Spanou is the school record holder in career points (2,124), field goals made (743), free throws made (505), rebounds (1,563), and minutes (4,575). The forward hailing out of Rhodes, Greece posted 33 consecutive double-doubles between her junior and senior seasons, which is the second longest streak in NCAA Division I history. Since graduating from RMU, Spanou has played professionally with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA, Istanbul Universitesi SK in Turkey, and most recently Spar Citylift Girona in Spain.
Stamolamprou is a two-time NEC Tournament MVP and helped the Colonials capture league tournament crowns in 2014, 2016, and 2017. The guard from Thessaloniki, Greece is the program's career record holder in three-point field goals (283) and games started (122), and joins Spanou as one of only two players in school history to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, and 100 steals in their four seasons donning the blue and white. Most recently, Stamolamprou was named NEC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete for the second consecutive year, which recognizes a conference student-athlete for both their athletic and academic success.
Greece is in Group C with Serbia, Slovenia, and France. The team opens its Eurobasket run on Friday, June 16 at noon ET against Serbia. Greece then plays Slovenia on Saturday, June 17 at noon ET before closing out group play on Monday, June 19 at 2:30 p.m. ET against France.
15 Colonials across nine different countries (Dominican Republic, England, Finland, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Slovakia, Spain) have represented their respective national teams under head coach Charlie Buscaglia.
