Colonials Excel at SHU Spring Fling

RMU earns gold in Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University rowing team continued its 2018 spring season Saturday with a strong showing at the SHU Spring Fling, hosted by Sacred Heart University in Shelton, Conn.

Battling the elements, the Colonials participated in a trio of varsity races and exhibition contests. The RMU second Varsity 8 and the Varsity 4 each claimed gold, while the Varsity 8 finished in second.

"Considering the minimal time we've spent on the water over the past few weeks, we're pleased with today's results," head coach Nelle Stahura said. "It will be great to see if we can make some improvement against these same crews next week."

The second Varsity 8 boat outlasted both Sacred Heart and Manhattan, recording a time of 9:10. The Pioneers finished 16 seconds behind, while the Jaspers posted a time of 9:45.

Sophomore Brittany Bell served as the coxswain, and she was joined in the boat by freshmen Emily Chmelovski and Emma McIntosh, senior Molly Falcone, sophomore Kalyssa Pottgeiser, junior Alyssa VanAuken, freshman Nicole Kristof and Alison Ishman and junior Hannah Daman.

In the Varsity 4, Robert Morris claimed gold courtesy of a time of 10:42. Manahattan (11:49), Sacred Heart (11:52) and Iona (14:26) trailed the Colonials.

The Varsity 4 consisted of sophomore Sophie Carroll, freshman Katy Cooke and juniors Sara Beth Johnson and Kathryn Gossel, while junior Sarah Heastings was the coxswain.

The RMU Varsity 8 barely missed out on making it a complete sweep for the Colonials, finishing second with a time of 8:48. Sacred Heart won the race at 8:36, while Manhattan (8:57) and Iona (9:17) rounded out the field.

The boat featured sophomore Kestra Harris as the coxswain and also included senior Lindsay Feltz, freshmen Taylor Boczar and Madelyn Green, sophomore Elizabeth Cottrell, junior Grace Faye, senior Melissa Asaro, freshman Molly McGuire and junior Miriam Levenson.

In exhibition action, Robert Morris claimed gold in the Novice 8 with a time of 4:48 while the Novice 4 raced a pair of boats, finishing second (4:58.79) and fourth (5:32.03). The Varsity 4 posted a time of 4:42.41 to also finish first.
