Moon Township, Pa. – Artemis Spanou, an alumnae (2010-14) of the Robert Morris University women's basketball team, helped her professional team, CCC Polkowice, capture a championship in Poland's Basket Liga Kobiet this past weekend.
Spanou, a two-time Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year and the 2014 NEC Tournament MVP, was instrumental in CCC Polkowice's 59-46 victory over Artego Bydgoszcz as she poured in a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. She knocked down two of her three trifecta attempts in 22 minutes, while adding three rebounds and an assist as CCC Polkowice – who features four players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) on its roster – led for the majority of the contest. The championship is the team's second overall and its first since 2013.
The Rhodes, Greece product has carved out a successful professional career, starting with a stint with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA after graduation. Spanou then moved on to Turkey to play for Istanbul Universitesi SK, followed by a stretch with Spar Citylift Girona in Spain's top league, Liga Femenina. She is one of eight former Colonials currently playing professionally overseas. The program as a whole has had 18 student-athletes begin a pro basketball career.
Spanou's name is all throughout the Robert Morris record books. A five-time All-NEC selection, she is the program's career leader in points (2,124), field goals made (743), free throws made (505), rebounds (1,563), and minutes played (4,575). Her rebounding total ranks eighth all-time in NCAA Division I history, while her 85 double-doubles are tied for fourth. 33 of those double-doubles came consecutively between the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, which is still the second-highest streak of its kind in NCAA annals.
Robert Morris concluded the 2017-18 campaign with its eighth postseason appearance since 2007 as it played in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Colonials won a school-record 25 games, captured a share of their sixth NEC regular-season championship, and eclipsed the 20-win mark for the 11th time in program history.
