Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse 2018 senior captain and midfielder
Dana Davis has been bestowed the honor of Northeast Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced at its awards banquet on Tuesday evening.
The award is presented to a male and female senior from across all sports in the Northeast Conference, and takes into account athletic accomplishments, academic success and community service involvement.
"Dana is one of the few student-athletes that has inspired our program to become better everyday," said women's lacrosse head coach
Katrina Silva.
"She worked incredibly hard to achieve the highest level both on the field and in the classroom," Silva said. "It was a privilege to have her lead our team and set an example for our future student-athletes to continue in her footsteps."
On the field, Davis led the Colonials midfield in 2018, recording 30 ground balls, 50 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers, to go with her 20 goals and 5 assists this season. In the 2018 season, Davis ranked among the NCAA's active career leaders in ground balls (6th, 183), ground balls per game (15th, 2.73), caused turnovers (11th, 96) and caused turnovers per game (31st, 1.43).Â
This season, Davis became RMU's all-time ground balls leader, graduating with the new record set at 184. Davis finished her Colonials career ranked sixth in points (133) and goals (102) in the RMU record books, third all-time in draw controls (145) and second all-time in caused turnovers (98).
A first-team all-Northeast Conference selection in both 2017 and 2018, Davis made an NEC squad in all four years of her career, earning second-team honors in 2016 and was a member of the all-Rookie team in 2015. Davis was selected as the Team MVP for the 2017 season as well. The Colonials reached the NEC tournament in each of Davis' four seasons at RMU.
The senior from Garnet Valley, Pa. completed her collegiate playing career last weekend at the IWLCA Senior All-Star game, one of just 44 Division I players to be invited to this elite event, one of three from the Northeast Conference. Davis has also been selected to play on the USA Athletes International (USAAI) Lacrosse Team in Australia in the Summer of 2018.
The community involvement and service list goes on and on for Davis, who spent 10 days in Nicaragua in the Fall of 2017, providing medical care to families and communities in need. Davis volunteered with the after-school program at MoonCrest near the RMU campus in the spring of 2017.Â
Davis also took great initiative as the co-founder of the RMU chapter of "Hope Happens Here," a group that focuses on mental health in student-athletes.
Academically, Davis' accomplishments are many, earning a spot on the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll each year, as well as being a member of the Dean's List in every semester at Robert Morris. Davis was the recipient of the 2018 Presidential Scholar-Athlete at the Robert Morris University all-sports banquet, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.92 GPA and Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing.
