Colonials Claim Third at Gary Freeman Invite; Miller, Palmer Finish Top Five

RMU carded a 53-over 917 over the two days; Chase Miller (+3) and Max Palmer (+6) placed second and fifth, respectively

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Led by a pair of top-five individual finishes, the Robert Morris University men's golf team placed third out of 16 teams in the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational, hosted by Bethune-Cookman at LPGA International.

In its first tournament of the spring season, Robert Morris climbed three spots after the first round and finished with a total  of 53-over 917. Augusta brought home the team title with a 14-over 878, followed by Bethune-Cookman (+26, 890). Sacred Heart (+55, 919) placed behind the Colonials, with Fort Wayne (+59, 923) rounding out the top five.

Chase Miller finished in a tie for second with a three-over 219. Miller carded a three-under 69 in the second round to jump into contention for medalist honors, then posted a three-over 75 to close the day. The freshman tallied just a single bogey in the second 18, coupling it with four birdies and 13 pars, then added two more birdies and 12 pars in the final round.

Max Palmer joined Miller in the top five with a fifth-place effort. Palmer posted three rounds of two-over 74, starting this morning with one birdie and 14 pars. The junior posted three birdies in the third round, with two of them coming over the last six holes.

Playing as an individual, David Szymanski finished just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th. Szymanski totaled an 11-over 224, with his best round being his last at two-over 74. The senior posted a pair of birdies and four pars in the first six holes, then added a third birdie on the 441-yard par-four ninth.

Kyle Grube placed in a deadlock for 23rd with a three-round tally of 15-over 23. Grube's best round was also his last, carding a three-over 75 with two birdies and 11 pars.

Daniel Franco Saad also played as an individual and finished in a tie for 44th (+21, 237). Bryce Gorrell and Nicholas Mihalo also competed for the Colonials, posting respective scores of 249 (+33) and 255 (+39).

McCullough Pickens brought home medalist honors with a three-day total of even-par 216.

Robert Morris returns to the links on Sunday, March 31 when it competes in the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Lafayette.
