PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's hockey team revealed two new additions to its 2021 freshman class Friday, head coach Derek Schooley announced.
Forwards Anthony Calafiore and Ryan Coughlin each signed their National Letters of Intent to join the Colonials ahead of their freshman seasons in 2021-22, additions that will bolster a Colonials squad looking to make its seventh consecutive AHA Final Four appearance.
"We are pleased to welcome Ryan and Anthony to the Colonial Hockey Family," Schooley said. "Both of these players are of high character and have an exceptional skill level. With their addition to our program, we will increase our speed, skill and ability to produce offense. I am excited to coach these exceptional young men."
Calafiore comes to RMU via a familiar route, as the forward is currently a member of the New Jersey Junior Titans of the NAHL.
Calafiore will be the third Titans alum to join the program in the last two seasons, following current freshman Kyler Head and Gavin Gulash in Moon Township. He spent the bulk of last season with the North Jersey Avalanche 18U AAA, posting 21 goals and 33 points in 30 total games.
Coughlin, meanwhile, will play out the 2020-21 campaign as a member of the USHL's Omaha Lancers after spending last season with the Corpus Christi Ice Rays of the NAHL. The forward led his squad in both goals (16) and total points (32) in 2019-20, where he was a teammate with current Colonials defenseman Tyler Love.
Robert Morris won its tenth consecutive best-of-three playoff series last March when they eliminated Holy Cross in the opening round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, an unbeaten streak that dates back to the 2013-14 campaign. RMU was picked to finish sixth in the 2020 AHA Preseason Coaches Poll and also received votes in the USHCO Preseason Poll as an honorable mention outside the Top 20.
The Colonials open up the 2021 campaign on Friday, November 20 when they host Alabama-Hunstville at Clearview Arena at 7 p.m.
