Moon Township, Pa. – Pat Gallagher head men's basketball coach
Andrew Toole announced Thursday that
Kahliel Spear (The Colony, Texas / The Colony) has transferred to
Robert Morris University. Spear will sit out the 2020-21 campaign under NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Colonials.
"Kahliel is a talented frontcourt player that has potential on both the offensive and defensive ends," Toole said. "We like that he's really active on the glass and is also good at defending the rim. We're excited to get him into the program and watch him develop in the next few years."
Spear spent the last two seasons at Bucknell University, where he appeared in 46 games, including a pair of starting assignments. Last year Spear played in 32 contests, providing averages of 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds while converting 52.4 percent (66-for-126) of his attempts from the floor. He also led the Bison in blocks with 26.
In a 68-64 victory @ Fairfield (11/5/19) in the opening game of the 2019-20 campaign for Bucknell, Spear finished with 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. He also came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points while tying a career high with nine caroms in a 72-68 victory over American (2/15/20). Spear shot 7-for-10 from the field against the Eagles and also rejected a pair of shots.
Led by Toole, Robert Morris posted an overall record of 20-14 (.588) in 2019-20, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the Northeast Conference. The Colonials earned the No. 1 seed in the 2020 NEC Tournament and claimed their league-high ninth tournament crown with a
77-67 triumph over Saint Francis U (3/10/20) in front of 4,034 fans at Peoples Court at the UPMC Events Center.
Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, RMU has recorded an overall record of 261-185 (.585), an average of 20.1 wins per year. During that span the Colonials have earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament four times (2009, 2010, 2015, 2020), have appeared in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) on three occasions (2008, 2013, 2014) and have played twice in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (2012, 2019).
Robert Morris returns three starters and six letterwinners in 2020-21, including guards
