Valencia Earns Two Titles at CMU Last Chance Meet

Fifth-year thrower wins discus, shot put for Colonials

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU track & field team added another midweek competition to its 2022 outdoor schedule, competing in the Carnegie Mellon Last Chance Meet Thursday at Gesling Stadium.

Fifth-year Yessie Valencia claimed yet another discus championship Thursday, the third of her career at Gesling Stadium. She finished with a toss of 45.87 meters (150'6") to claim gold. Fellow fifth-year Estelle Katende earned silver in the event, posting a mark of 41.88 meters (137'5"). The individual title for Valencia was one of two she earned at Carnegie Mellon. In the shot put, Valencia unleashed a hurl of 12.11 meters (39'8.75") to finish first. In the same event, Katende claimed fourth at 11.63 meters (38'2"), while junior Alijah Caul finished at 11.62 meters (38'1.50").
 
OTHER FIELD HAPPENINGS
A pair of Colonials also earned individual championships in the field events Thursday, including senior Tara Gologram and freshman Rayna Todero. Gologram posted a leap of 5.64 meters (18'6") in the long jump to take home gold, while Todero did the same in the triple jump at 11.12 meters (36'5.75"). Also in the jumps, junior Lauren Chappell posted a season best in the high jump at 1.46 meters (4'9.50"), good enough to finish third.
 
LAP IT UP
Sophomore Rio Strosnider posted the best time of her career in the 800-meter Thursday at the Carnegie Mellon Last Chance Meet and in the process finished first. She posted a time of 2:24.81 to outlast Tresa Coon (2:25.20) of Chatham and Jana Schmid (2:26.44) of Point Park.
 
SPRINTS

Freshman Maddie Raymond posted a finish of second place in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 12.59 seconds. She was followed in the event by junior Elicia Moore (12.70), freshman Hanna McDanel (12.80), senior Tara Gologram (12.98) and freshman Errisa George (13.61). Moore also earned silver in the 200-meter dash at 25.69 seconds, while McDanel claimed bronze at 26.07. In the 100-meter hurdles, Chappell posted the best time in the meet at 16.10 seconds.

The Colonials head to Lewisburg, Pa., to take part in the Bison Outdoor Classic Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, on the campus of Bucknell University.
