UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Despite a stronger second half showing, the RMU men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Penn State on Tuesday evening at Jeffrey Field. With the result, the Colonials move to 3-2-4 overall on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening half hour saw limited attacking chances from both sides, as the Colonials and Nittany Lions traded possession in the midfield. Penn State generated the early pressure with four corner kicks and a lone shot on goal, while RMU tallied one corner during that span.
In the 35th minute, the home side broke through when Kai Phillips collected a cross inside the box. His initial effort was stopped by RMU goalkeeper
Josh Lane, but Phillips quickly converted on the rebound to make it 1-0.
Just four minutes later, Penn State doubled its advantage. Off a set piece, Ben Liscum was positioned at the back post and slotted home the service for a 2-0 lead. The Nittany Lions carried a 54% possession edge into halftime.
RMU responded with more urgency in the second half, stringing together longer spells of possession and creating chances.
The Colonials registered five shots and earned three corner kicks after the break, but were unable to cut into the deficit.
