BALTIMORE – The RMU women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the season, falling 3-1 to UMBC. The Colonials now head into conference play with a 2-4-1 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Goalkeeper
Abbey Cowles was tested early, facing four shots within the opening 14 minutes. She made two saves on both shots that were on target.
The Retrievers then earned a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Zoe Brossman converted the shot to give UMBC an early 1-0 lead.
Just moments later, RMU's defense came up big as senior
Emerson Johngarlo stopped a ball on the goal line to prevent a second score.
In the 38th minute, the Colonials drew a penalty of their own, and junior
Ava Trethewey stepped up to calmly put the ball in the back of the net, tying the game 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Colonials looked to take the lead, with
Paloma Swankler hitting the woodwork in the 54th minute. However, UMBC responded, with Kristiana Kolega scoring the go-ahead goal.
Brossman would add her second tally of the game in the 83rd minute to seal the 3-1 victory for the Retrievers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
UMBC outshot RMU 27 to 12 and held a 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Retrievers also earned six corner kicks to the Colonials' three. Graduate goalkeeper
Abbey Cowles made a season-high seven saves in her second appearance for RMU.
Shauna Gamble,
Emerson Johngarlo,
Jillian Marvin, and
Julia Becerra all played for the full 90 minutes. Junior
McKenzie Pritts made her season debut, playing the final three minutes of the match.
UP NEXT
The Colonials will begin Horizon League action on Thursday, September 18, when they host Milwaukee at the North Athletic Complex. The game is scheduled for 4:00 PM and will stream live on ESPN+.
