Colonials Set for Rivalry Road Test at Youngstown State

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. –  RMU women's basketball is back on the road to open up the week as the Colonials travel to Youngstown State for a Horizon League matchup on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from the Zidian Family Arena at Beegly Center. The contest is set to stream on ESPN+
 
RMU LATELY
The Colonials are coming off a 1-1 week and are currently 16-8 overall and 9-6 in Horizon League play. RMU opened the week up with a heartbreaking loss to Horizon League leader Green Bay, falling 61-58 on a last-second buzzer beater by the Phoenix, before turning around and getting a 71-64 overtime win against the Milwaukee Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
 
Against Green Bay, the Colonials had three players score in double-digits, with Bailey Kuhns leading the way with a near double-double of 18 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Myriam Traore was the next-highest scorer for the Colonials with 16 points while adding six rebounds and two blocks. Aislin Malcolm rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 points along with six rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
 
In the overtime win over Milwaukee, Eva Levingston had a career-high 19 points to lead the Colonials. Levingston went 7-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line while also recording seven rebounds. Malcolm and Kuhns also had another big game for the Colonials, with Malcolm scoring 18 along with five assists, while Kuhns recorded 14, going 6-for-14 on the afternoon. Jada Lee got in on the action for the Colonials, recording her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead RMU on the glass.
 
RMU AND YSU HISTORY
Wednesday night will be the 36th matchup in history between RMU and Youngstown State, with the Penguins winning the series 24-11 since 1982. Despite not winning the overall series, the Colonials are on a three-game win streak over the Penguins, with their last loss against Youngstown State coming back in Ohio on Jan. 27, 2024. On the road, the Colonials are just 3-13.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
The pair first met this season back on Jan. 21, with the Colonials securing a 55-40 win over the Penguins in Moon Township. Ava Leroux and Eva Levingston led the offensive charge for the Colonials, with Levingston putting up 13 and Leroux scoring 12. The duo also led the Colonials on the glass with Levingston recording a double-double with a team-leading 10 rebounds while Leroux set a new career-high with eight. Bailey Kuhns and Aislin Malcolm each chipped in offensively with nine points apiece.
 
In the matchup, the Colonials' defense locked down Youngstown State, allowing the Penguins to score only 40 points, which is the lowest amount in a Horizon League win in school history since the Colonials joined back in 2020. RMU held Youngstown State to just 30% from the floor, with the Penguins going 15-for-50. Casey Santoro led the Penguins with 19 points.
 
SCOUTING YSU
The Penguins are coming into the matchup with sole possession of second place in the Horizon League, posting a 17-8 overall record and a 10-5 mark against conference opponents. Youngstown State is coming off a tough 54-51 loss to Green Bay on Saturday. In the loss, Sarah Baker led all players with 18 points while going 8-for-13 from the field and adding seven rebounds and three assists.
 
Offensively, the Penguins are ranked sixth in the conference, averaging 66.8 points per game, led by Casey Santoro with 12.3 points per game and Sarah Baker with 11.4 points per game. The duo is ranked 12th and 13th in the conference, right behind RMU's Aislin Malcolm. On the defensive side, the Penguins' defense leads the conference, allowing opponents to score 56.8 points on average per game. Youngstown State has held opponents to just 35.8% shooting from the floor through 25 games this season.
 
Youngstown State is led by head coach Melissa Jackson, who is in just her second season at the helm of the Penguins. Jackson has led Youngstown State to a 29-27 record. Before Youngstown State, Jackson was the head coach at Akron, leading the Zips to a 72-69 record during her five-year tenure. Jackson currently has a 101-96 record through seven years as a head coach.
