Princeton, N.J. - The Robert Morris University men's tennis team concluded its 2007-08 season at the Northeast Conference Tournament, reaching the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Fairleigh Dickinson and finishing in a tie for third place.
The Colonials entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and opened play by knocking off No. 4 seed Sacred Heart Friday morning before falling in the semifinals to the Knights Saturday afternoon, 4-0. RMU finishes its 2007-08 campaign with a dual-match record of 7-14.
Against the Pioneers victories at the third, fourth and sixth singles flights, as well as earning the doubles point, pushed Robert Morris to victory.
Senior Mateusz Wodzinski (Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich) garnered a 6-4 and 7-6 (7-0) win over Nick Mazzarese at the No. 3 singles, followed by sophomore Sean Curley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills), who defeated Mike Syer at the No. 4 flight, 6-4 and 6-2.
At the No. 6 singles flight, freshman Robert Switzer (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Charlottetown) defeated Cole Conrad, 6-3, 5-7 and 6-2.
In doubles play, Wodzinski and Curley teamed up to knock off Kirill Kasyanov and Mazzarese, 8-4, while Switzer and senior Nick Paganetti (The Woodlands, Texas / McCullough) helped the Colonials win the doubles point by garnering an 8-6 win over Jinal Shah and Conrad.
Fairleigh Dickinson was able to garner a 4-0 win over RMU with victories at the first, second and fifth flights of singles play while also claiming the doubles point. Philip Stevens downed junior Ryan Cameron (Battle Creek, Mich. / Harper Creek), 6-0 and 6-0 at the No. 1 flight, while senior Paganetti fell to Matt Gordon, 6-1 and 6-0, at the No. 2 singles.
At the No. 5 singles flight, sophomore David Pinto (Burlington, Ontario / Nelson) dropped a 6-0 and 6-3 decision to Kyle Eddins. Fairleigh Dickinson also claimed victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles flights to help seal the win.
