Colonials Suffer 3-0 Setback to Wisconsin-Green Bay

Bowling Green, Ohio - Sept. 12, 2009 - On day two of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational, the Robert Morris University Colonials started the day with a 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 23-25) loss to the Wisconsin- Green Bay Phoenix. The loss marks the Colonials sixth straight and brings their record to 3-7, while the Phoenix improves to 3-5.

The match started with a kill to the deep right corner by junior Jaye Hellmich (Costa Mesa, Calif. / Estancia)  to give Colonials a 1-0 lead, but Green Bay answered back immediately with a kill of its own to tie things up. This pattern continued for several points, with Hellmich tallying three kills in the first six points of play. However, the Colonials suffered several hitting errors, which enabled the Phoenix to pull away, 7-4. Green Bay ended the set winning 25-13. Hellmich led all hitters in set one with five kills on a .667 hitting percentage.

Green Bay dominated set two and went on a seven point run at 1-1 to earn an 8-1 advantage. Freshman Lindsey Monger (Rising Sun, Md. / Rising Sun) was finally able to end the scoring streak with a kill, but Green Bay immediately responded with a kill by Nikki Hintze and went on another five point run. The Colonials were never able to get back into the set and fell to the Phoenix 25-14.

Set three started similar to the first two with the Phoenix leading for the majority of the time. However, at 22-15 in Green Bay's favor, junior Addie Jennings (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Dos Pueblos) fired a shot cross court for a kill, which was followed with two kills by sophomore Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and a service ace by Hellmich to bring the score within three at 22-19. Green Bay was able to side-out, but Veith tallied another kill, which was followed by a Phoenix error to bring the score within two at 23-21. Despite the aggressive comeback, the Phoenix took set three 25-23 and the match win.

Veith and Hellmich led the team with eight kills apiece on hitting percentages of .429 and .357, respectively. Veith also finished the match with three blocks, while Hellmich added two.

The Colonials wrap up the weekend at the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational when they take on the tournament host Bowling Green tonight at 7:00 p.m.
