Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - The University of Wisconsin displayed why it is the unanimous No. 1 team in the country as the Badgers knocked off the Robert Morris University women's hockey team, 7-1, Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.
The Badgers have proved to be a tough foe for essentially everyone they have faced as they have won 11 of their first 12 games and lead the nation in winning percentage. Wisconsin also leads the nation in both scoring offense and scoring margin.
Junior assistant captain Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta / Edmonton Thunder) ensured that RMU would not be shutout as she scored her first goal of the season at the 3:41 mark of the second period.
With Stack's goal, Robert Morris' scoring streak remained intact--an opponent has been unable to shutout the Colonials in their last 22 games, a program best for RMU, even though they have played nine of those contests against nationally-ranked teams. This was also the fifth game already this season that Robert Morris has played against a team that has been ranked No. 1 nationally at some point this season.
Robert Morris competed admirably with the Badgers in the game's opening frame as it held the three-time national champions to a single goal while allowing Wisconsin a limited number of scoring chances.
The final two periods saw a greater frequency in whistles, which turned out to be a disadvantage for the Colonials. Robert Morris was called for nine penalties over the final 40 minutes, whereas Wisconsin only received two. The Badgers gained from the increase in calls as they would score four special-teams goals that helped them put the game out of reach.
After Wisconsin had put up three goals, RMU got on the board thanks to a play that began when sophomore Jennifer Kindret (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) intercepted a Badger pass at the edge of the Wisconsin defensive zone. Kindret quickly found Stack streaking down the center of the ice. Stacks's first shot attempt was saved by the Badger goalkeeper, but she proved resilient as she picked up the rebound and refused to be denied, collecting her fourth career goal in the process.
A day after firing the most shots by any opponent against the Badgers all season, the Colonials picked up another achievement in that department Saturday although this time it concerned their refusal to concede them. Robert Morris held Wisconsin to only six third-period shots, which tied the Badgers' season-low for a period and was fewer than half of Wisconsin's shots per period average.
RMU will conclude its six-game homestand next weekend when it welcomes the University of Maine to Pittsburgh for a pair of games, Friday, Nov. 26, and Saturday, Nov. 27. Robert Morris will look to extend its current six-game winning streak against the Black Bears when the first puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
