Robert Morris Ties Mavericks to Claim Series

Box Score Mankato, Minn. - A day after playing a role in both goals in a 2-1 victory, junior Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) of the Robert Morris University women's hockey team once again registered a multi-point performance as the Colonials came back from an early deficit to tie Minnesota State, 2-2, at All Seasons Arena Saturday evening.

Despite falling behind in each of the first two games of its program-record eight-game road trip, the Colonials came back both days and did not lose either contest.

Delaney, who moved into second place on RMU's career points list Friday, collected both Colonial goals to conclude the two-game series with three goals and an assist. It was her team-leading fifth multi-point game of the season and the 20th occasion in her career in which she has tallied at least two points in one game. It marked the second time that she has recorded back-to-back multi-point games this season.

It was also Delaney's second multi-goal game of the season and the seventh of her career, which now gives her sole possession of first place among all active Colonials in multi-goal games.

Senior assistant captain Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) collected an assist on Delaney's second goal and now has 13 points in her last 13 games. O'Malley and Delaney are now tied for the team lead with 15 points apiece.

Minnesota State got an early chance to take the lead as it received a power play just over five minutes into the game. The RMU penalty-kill unit and sophomore goalie Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) were up to the task, though, and successfully erased the Maverick power-play opportunity.

However, 57 seconds after the man-advantage ended, Minnesota State did manage to take the early lead as Melissa Klippenstein found the back of the net with Emmi Leinonen providing the assist.

Robert Morris came right back and attempted the first three shots after the opening goal but was unable to crack the scoring column, so RMU headed into the locker room trailing by one.

After DiCiocco made four saves early in the second to keep the margin at one, Robert Morris earned a power play just under five minutes into the middle frame and soon took advantage. Delaney scored the tying goal at the 5:47 mark and rearranged a category in the RMU record book in the process. The man-advantage tally, the 15th of her career, moved her into a tie for first place at Robert Morris in all-time power-play goals with former Colonial Kristen Miles.

Although it was unable to convert on a power-play chance in the closing minutes of the second stanza, RMU may have succeeded in wearing down the Mavericks. Delaney lit the lamp just 47 seconds after a Colonial extra-man advantage had ended as O'Malley added the helper at the 16:12 mark.

Minnesota State had a chance to regroup at the second intermission and tied the game almost right away in the third. Lauren Zrust knotted the proceedings at two apiece at the 2:07 mark of the third as Kelsie Scott assisted on the goal.

After tying it up, the Mavericks looked primed to retake the lead when they earned a power play fewer than two minutes later. DiCiocco and the Colonials had other ideas as the netminder made three stops to halt Minnesota State's momentum in killing off the penalty.

The Mavericks were given a final shot to win the game in regulation as they went on the power play again with under five minutes to go in the third. Robert Morris again defended well to kill the power play and force overtime. The Colonial penalty-kill unit was successful throughout the weekend as it held Minnesota State without a power-play goal in either game.

Delaney gave RMU a chance for the win in overtime but her attempt at a hat trick was corralled by the Maverick goalie. DiCiocco made two stops in the extra session to ensure that Minnesota State would not come away victorious and finished the day with 29 saves overall.

RMU will continue its record road trip next weekend as it resumes College Hockey America (CHA) play with a trip to Niagara for a pair of games, Dec. 10-11.
