Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. - Feb. 13, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials started off with a 2-0 lead against the Syracuse Orange on Saturday evening at the Tennity Ice Pavilion, but the Orange survived the two goal lead by scoring three goals within a three-minute span during the third period to take the 3-2 victory.
The loss drops the Colonials to 8-21-1 overall and 1-10-1 in league play, while the Orange improve to 17-14-1 overall and 8-6-0 in the conference.
"I am pleased with a road split, but am disappointed with giving up a two goal lead," said head coach Nate Handrahan. "Kudos to Syracuse for sticking with it and riding some momentum."
Just like Friday night the ice remained silenced after 20 minutes of play in the first period. The Colonials and the Orange played relentless defense to keep things scoreless heading into the second period.
For the second consecutive game the Colonials scored the first goal of the contest when freshman Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) scored an unassisted goal at 7:23 in the second frame. The goal marked her fifth goal of the season.
The third period saw a lot of action early on as RMU increased its lead to two when junior Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) scored a power play goal just 25 seconds into the period off assists from sophomore Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) and junior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks).
Unfortunately, the Colonials would hold that lead for a short time as Syracuse scored two goals within 12 seconds to equalize the score at 2-2. Isabel Menard scored the first goal at 4:15 off of assists from Holly Carrie-Mattimo and Gabrielle Beaudr and Julie Rising scored the tying goal at 4:27. Kelsey Welch and Beaudr were credited with the assists on the play.
At 5:38, Syracuse took the lead when Lisa Mullan found the back of the net off Beaudr's third assist of the contest. Robert Morris was unable to fight through the Orange defense for the remaining 15 minutes of play to secure the 3-2 win for Syracuse.
Syracuse outshot the Colonials 32 to 22 with Lucy Schoedel making 20 saves in the win to junior Daneca Butterfield's (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) 29 saves. RMU held Syracuse scoreless on three power play opportunities, while Robert Morris went 1-for-2 on the extra man advantage.
The Colonials return home to host the Niagara Purple Eagles on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 with both games starting at 7:00 p.m.
