Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. - Even though the Robert Morris University women's hockey team outshot Syracuse 15-5 in the third period, the Orange were able to manage the tiebreaking goal as Syracuse added an empty-netter to down RMU, 3-1, in College Hockey America (CHA) action Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The game finally brought Robert Morris' program-record, eight-game road trip--in which the Colonials traveled to both Minnesota and New England--to a close.
Senior assistant captain Sara O'Malley's (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) program-record 46th career goal gave the Colonials the lead and left her tied for tops on the team this season with eight.
Sophomore Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) provided the primary assist on O'Malley's score and in the process became the 14th Colonial in school history to reach the 20-assist and 30-point plateaus for her career. Newsom's helper was her team-leading 14th assist of the season and leaves her just four shy of the single-season school record with nine regular-season games remaining.
The Colonials produced an early chance to take the lead when they earned a power play just 40 seconds into the game. RMU attempted four shots during the man advantage, but the Orange were able to successfully kill it off and prevent an early deficit.
Syracuse received a chance to strike first when it was granted a power play at the 13:13 mark, but the Robert Morris penalty-kill unit proved up to the task as it held the Orange without a shot on goal for the entire power play. That effort was emblematic of a larger team effort in the opening frame for RMU as it held Syracuse to just three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, and the teams skated into the intermission scoreless.
Robert Morris came out of the break and took the lead at the 6:21 mark of the second. Not long after freshman defenseman Kylie St. Louis' (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) shot was saved, O'Malley lit the lamp to put RMU on top. St. Louis collected an assist along with Newsom. RMU kept the pressure on as the Colonials nearly doubled their advantage when freshman Thea Imbrogno's (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) attempt hit the pipe.
Nearly going down two goals may have caused the Orange to play with a sense of urgency as Syracuse soon responded by knotting the game when Isabel Menard scored an unassisted goal at the 11:26 mark of the second. Neither team could grab the lead over the closing minutes of the middle stanza, and the squads were once again all square heading into the locker room.
Robert Morris put some early pressure on Syracuse in the third by firing three shots on net in the first few minutes, but it was the Orange that turned the tables and took the lead when Menard put home the puck at the 3:02 mark. RMU had an opportunity to even the proceedings a few minutes later when it earned a power play, but Syracuse blocked three consecutive Colonial attempts in killing off the chance.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Imbrogno almost turned the tide of the game by earning a penalty shot due to a hooking infraction on the Orange. Syracuse goalie Kallie Billadeau proved resolute in net, though, and stopped Imbrogno's attempt.
Robert Morris pulled its goalie with just under two minutes left in search of the equalizer, but Syracuse was able to place one into the empty net to essentially end RMU's comeback hopes.
O'Malley and Imbrogno, the reigning CHA Rookie of the Month, both tied the team season high in shots with eight as Robert Morris outshot Syracuse 30-19. RMU's third-period performance marked the fourth occasion this season in which the Colonials fired at least 10 more shots than their opponent in a single period.
Robert Morris also won the faceoff battle, claiming 32 of the 56 draws contested, with Newsom putting up an impressive 15-8 mark at the dot.
Although Robert Morris will finally play its first home game in 55 days next weekend, the Colonials will have quite a challenge on their hands as they host No. 5 Mercyhurst. The CHA foes will play a two-game set, Friday, Jan. 21, and Saturday, Jan. 22.
