Colonials Edge Saint Francis in Penalty Strokes

Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Oct. 21, 2011 - The Robert Morris field hockey team picked up its second Northeast Conference win of the season this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) that went all the way to double penalty strokes before a winner was found.

Senior midfielder Chantele Crow (Dauphin, Pa. / Central Dauphin) tallied the only goal in regulation for the Colonials after corralling a rebound of her own shot and putting it behind Red Flash netminder Katelyn Vitali fifteen minutes into the second half.  The Red Flash tied the game less than three minutes later as Carissa Makea scored on a set play off of a penalty corner.

After multiple scoring chances for both teams in the two overtime periods, the squads headed to penalty strokes.

The Colonials jumped out to a quick advantage in the penalty strokes with successful attempts by freshmen Taleah Scott (Crookwell, Australia / Crookwell) and Michelle Lewthwaite (Macarthur, Australia / Westfield Sports).  That advantage did not last and after five shooters the teams had each scored three times.  The second set of strokes determined the outcome as the Colonials were successful three times while the Red Flash only converted one attempt.  The game-winning goal was awarded to freshman defender Meredith Krick (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra Area) after she successfully converted her attempt in the ninth round.

Freshman goaltender Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University of Queensland Tech) made five saves during the penalty strokes and eight saves during regulation.

The Colonials travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to take on Rider this Sunday for a noon face-off before returning home to close out the season against Monmouth with their senior recognition day on Sunday, October 30 at noon.
