Witmyer?s Win Highlights Opening of Indoor Season

Youngstown, Ohio - Freshman Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) of the Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team won the high jump as the squad opened its 2011-12 indoor campaign by taking part in the Youngstown State Invitational.

Witmyer achieved a height of 1.92 meters to take home an individual crown in his first intercollegiate action. No team scoring was kept at the meet.

Robert Morris posted a strong showing in the 400-meter dash as the Colonials took three of the top six spots in the 26-man field. Sophomore Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) finished in 49.96 to take fourth, sophomore Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) clocked in at 50.05 to claim fifth and freshman Malcom Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) crossed the line in 50.29 to finish in sixth place.

Carper and Dwight were also among the top performers in other events as the former placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.51 seconds, while the latter was eighth among 32 entrants in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.69.

RMU also combined to take two of the top four places in the shot put. Junior Charles Turner-Diaz (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill) registered a throw of 15.02 meters to take third while classmate Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) was right behind in fourth with a heave of 14.99 meters. Ray was also sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.68 meters.

In other field events, junior Lance Washington (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13.47 meters.

Along with Carper's fourth-place finish in the hurdles, junior Tyler Morton (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) and freshman Grant Kiuawa (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) were also both among the top eight to cross the line as each finished in less than 8.70 seconds.

A pair of Colonial rookies both earned seventh-place finishes as Daniel Lee (Larue, Ohio / Marion Plesant) finished in 2:00.90 in the 800-meter run while Brendan Lamy (Sinking Spring, Pa. / Wilson) tossed the shot put 14.51 meters.

Robert Morris will be back in action this weekend, Dec. 9-10, as it takes part in the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.
