Moon Township, Pa. –
Former Robert Morris University track & field standout Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) finished 11th in the javelin at the 2014 USA Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships Sunday at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif., on the campus of Sacramento State University.

Competing unattached after receiving an at-large invitation, Carper finished third in his flight with a distance of 70.48 meters (231'3"). One of three college student-athletes competing at the USATF Outdoor Championships, Carper finished one spot behind Michael Shuey of Penn State, who finished 10th with a toss of 71.01 meters (232'11"), and two spots ahead of Tom Carr of Rutgers, who claimed 13th with a throw of 66.88 meters (219'5").

Thanks to his performance, Carper qualified for the prestigious NACAC Under-23 Championships as a member of Team USA. The international meet, which features 24 competing teams from the nations of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, will take place August 8-10, 2014, in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Prior to his participation in the NACAC Under-23 Championships, Carper has been invited to a throws symposium at the Team USA Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., July 29-August 6, 2014. He will spend close to a week training as part of the symposium.

During his career at Robert Morris, Carper was a four-time All-Northeast Conference selection in the javelin, winning the individual title in the event at the NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in both 2013 and 2014.

The program's first student-athlete to be named to the NCAA All-America First Team, Carper owns each of the top 11 marks in school history in the javelin, including 73.09 meters (239'9"), which is a school record and helped him claim the individual championship at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
