Robb & Veith Combine to Sweep Three NEC Awards

Moon Township, Pa. - Senior captain Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and freshman outside hitter Erica Robb (Novi, Mich. / Novi) of the Robert Morris University volleyball team combined to sweep the three weekly awards given out by the Northeast Conference (NEC) as announced in a league release Monday after leading the team to a perfect 3-0 week, all coming on the road, including two league wins to open its conference slate.

Veith earned Molten/NEC Player of the Week honors for the fourth time in her career and also grabbed her second-consecutive Molten/NEC Defender of the Week honor while Robb became the second Colonial in as many weeks to claim a Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week accolade.

Robert Morris, which became the first school in NEC history to garner all three volleyball honors in the same week, collected multiple NEC awards in back to back weeks for the first time since 2008. Veith also played a part on the last occasion that RMU pulled such a feat when she registered her second-career rookie of the week award. It is also the sixth overall occurrence since November 2008 in which multiple Colonials were honored by the NEC in the same week.

The pair of weekly honors are the seventh and eighth from the NEC in Veith's career and marked the second time in her career in which she has received hardware in back-to-back weeks.

Robb tallied the first award of her young career, becoming the sixth active Colonial to have claimed recognition from the league and the fifth to have done so in the rookie category.

Veith hit at an absurd .596 cumulative mark in RMU's three matches this week while tallying 22 total blocks in just 11 sets played, averaging a remarkable 2.0 blocks per set. She put down double-digit kills in all three of her matches and finished the week averaging 3.36 per set. Veith began the week by collecting her first-career regular-season double-double on the strength of 11 kills and a career-high 12 blocks, which came in just four sets; her 12 blocks, six of which came during the match's final clinching game, were the most by a Colonial in a match since 2003. She made only one error against the Penguins to hit .667 in the win. Veith contributed a match-high 14 kills in RMU's NEC opener at Long Island, hitting .632, and added a match-high seven blocks. It was the first time in her career in which she hit at least .600 in back-to-back matches and the first occasion in which she tallied at least seven blocks in back-to-back matches. She wrapped up the week with 12 kills and a .522 hitting percentage to help Robert Morris move to 2-0 in league play with a sweep at St. Francis (N.Y.).

With her gaudy week, the veteran continued to move upward in the RMU career record book. Veith, who currently ranks second all-time in hitting percentage for RMU with her .339 mark, tallied her 850th-career kill Sunday and is now just 20 shy of moving into the all-time top 10 at Robert Morris. She also leapt into the Colonials' top five in career total blocks as she presently is fifth with 349.

Robb began the week by totaling a season-best five blocks along with  nine kills and seven digs as RMU knocked off Youngstown State. She may have delivered her finest performance of the season thus far in the biggest match yet as she racked up numbers in the NEC opener. Against perennial league rival Long Island on the road, Robb collected her second double-double of the campaign due to a career-best and match-high 18 kills, the best single-match total by a Colonial freshman since 2007. The rookie also contributed 14 digs on the defensive side to help keep the Blackbirds' hitters in check. Robb finished the week with 11 more kills at St. Francis (N.Y.) to post a team-leading 3.45 kills per set for the past week. She has now posted back-to-back double-figure kill matches for the second time this season.

Robb has competed in all 16 matches as a freshman for RMU and sits third on the team in both kills (128) and kills/set (2.46). The rookie is about to surpass the century mark in digs and has also contributed 18 blocks.

Robert Morris now returns home for a season-long five-match homestand after playing 12 of its first 16 away from the Sewall Center. The Colonials are back in action this Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they meet in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m.
