Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field team continued its 2011-12 campaign this past weekend by taking part in a pair of meets in Ohio, competing at the Akron Opener Friday before participating in the Doug Raymond Invitational on the campus of Kent State Saturday.
At the Akron Opener, sophomore Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) earned second place in the 400-meter dash thanks to a time of 49.60. He finished just behind J'Lani Pryce of Akron, who won the individual championship with a time of 49.38.
Dwight was one of two Colonials to finish in the top five in the 400-meter dash at Akron, as sophomore Nicolas Gentile (Freeport, Pa. / Freeport) posted a time of 50.12 to finish fifth.
In the 60-meter hurdles at Akron, sophomore Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) finished second with a time of 8.40, while sophomore Abraham Roy (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) posted a time of 22.64 in the 200-meter dash, the fourth best mark in the Northeast Conference this season.
In the throw, junior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) took home a pair of top 10 finishes at Akron.
Ray posted a toss of 15.75 meters (51'8.25") in the shot put to finish third and qualify for the IC4A/ECAC Championships, while his tally of 15.98 meters (52'5.25") in the weight throw to finish eighth.
Ray continued his solid indoor campaign the following afternoon at the Doug Raymond Invite on the campus of Kent State, improving on his mark in the shot put from a day earlier by finishing seventh with a throw of 15.76 meters (51'8.50"). He also finished fourth in the weight throw thanks to a toss of 15.91 meters (52'2.50").
In the track events at the Doug Raymond Invitational, sophomore Mac Byrne-Houser (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) earned a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run thanks to a time of 16:14.18, while sophomore Freddie Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) finished fifth in the 1,000-meter by crossing the finish line in 2:35.30.
The RMU distance medley relay squad that consisted of Gentile, sophomore Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills), junior Tyler Morton (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) and freshman Tip Worob (Denton, Md. / North Caroline) finished first with a time of 10:27.46, over 15 seconds faster than the same squad from Ohio University, which finished second at 10:42.66.
Robert Morris continues its 2011-12 campaign Saturday, Jan. 14, by traveling to Edinboro, Pa., to take part in the Al Hall Freedom Games on the campus of Edinboro University.
