Hackensack, N.J. / Stratis Arena -The Robert
Morris University women's basketball team snapped a four-game slide with a
73-49 drubbing of Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Stratis Arena in
Hackensack, N.J., Monday afternoon. The victory over their Northeast Conference
foe moves the Colonials to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in league play. The Knights
fall to 9-11 overall and 4-4 against conference foes.
Sophomore Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni
(Greek National Team)) recorded her sixth consecutive double-double and her 11th
of the season by scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. The reigning
NEC Rookie of the Year went 6-of-12 from the floor and added three assists and
three blocks.
Senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey
(British National Team)) moved into fifth all-time at Robert Morris with 696
career rebounds after picking up eight. The senior tacked on 20 points on
9-of-16 shooting. Junior Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral
Area)) added 17 points to go with three steals and four assists.
A slow start by both teams saw FDU get on the board first
on a put-back by Erika Livermore just over two minutes in. The Colonials would
then race out to a 9-4 lead as Durojaye screod four straight points. A trey
from Spanou and a driving lay-in by Josette Campbell (London, England / Notre
Dame Prep (Northwest Florida State)) stretched the margin to nine points, 14-5,
eight minutes into the contest.
A three-pointer from Amanda Andrades made it a nine-point
game, 20-13, with 8:45 to play in the opening half. That, however, would be the
last field goal for the Knights in the first 20 minutes. RMU closed the half
with a 12-3 surge to go into the locker room holding a 32-16 lead.
The Knights came out of the locker room with energy,
cutting the RMU lead to 12 points, 46-34, with 12:55 left to play. A
three-pointer by Tye jumpstarted a 12-0 run that featured seven points from the
junior college transfer. By the time FDU scored again, RMU was holding a 58-34
lead and nearly seven minutes had ticked off the clock.
The Colonials held at least a 20-point lead the rest of
way en route to a 73-49 win.
The Colonials return to the Charles L. Sewall Center to
host St. Francis (N.Y.) this Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4:00 p.m.
