Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's indoor track & field had its final tuneup before the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships by taking part in the Youngstown State Invitational this past weekend in Youngstown, Ohio.
A pair of Colonials qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the 500-meter dash, with sophomores Nicolas Gentile (Freeport, Pa. / Freeport) and Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) each eclipsing the qualifying time.
Gentile claimed the individual title in the event by posting a time of 1:03.95, the top time in the Northeast Conference this season, while Dwight took home silver with a time of 1:04.62.
Also finishing in the top five in the 500-meter dash for RMU was sophomore Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills), who finished fourth with a time of 1:05.31.
In the 800-meter, sophomore Freddie Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) won the individual title with a time of 1:58.66, while freshman Tip Worob (Denton, Md. / North Caroline) finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:46.69.
In the field events, sophomore Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) finished third in the long jump with a leap of 6.76 meters (22'2.25"), while freshman Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) finished second in the triple jump at 13.54 meters (44'5.25").
Junior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area), who already has qualified for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the shot put, put forth his best throw of the season in the event, finishing third with a toss of 16.08 meters (52'9.25"). Ray also finished seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 15.07 meters (49'5.50").
Robert Morris now gears up for the 2012 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which take place Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
