Worob Propels RMU at Penn State Relays

University Park, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's track & field team returned to action after the holiday break by taking part in the Penn State Relays at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track this past Saturday.

In his indoor track & field collegiate debut, freshman Tip Worob (Denton, Md. / North Caroline) propelled the Colonials at the meet, winning the mile run while also anchoring the RMU distance medley relay squad.

Worob posted a time of 4:22.44 in the mile to take home the individual championship in the 12-person field. He finished over a second ahead of T.J. Cowing of UMBC, who notched second place with a time of 4:23.86.

Worob also posted an identical mark of 4:22 in the mile to anchor RMU's distance medley relay squad that finished fifth with a time of 10:24.55.

Joining Worob on the distance relay team were sophomore Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills), junior Tyler Morton (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) and sophomore Nicolas Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport).

The Robert Morris 4x800-meter relay team that featured Gentile, Rumble, sophomore Fred Thompson (Turtle Creek, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and freshman Darryl  Jones (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville) established a new school record in the event, finishing with a time of 3:23.85, just one second off qualifying for the IC4A/ECAC Championships.

Other highlights for the Colonials at the Penn State Relays came courtesy of junior Brendan Morales (Westminster, Md. / Westminster), who earned bronze in the shot put thanks to a mark of 16.42 meters (53'10.50").

The toss trailed only Logan Caldwell (16.94 meters) and Nabil Mubarak (16.75 meters) of the host Nittany Lions and was good enough to qualify Morales for the IC4A/ECAC Championships.

In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) posted a time of 8.43 seconds, while freshman Jones Twenefor (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) posted a time of 7.21 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

Robert Morris continues its 2011-12 indoor campaign Friday, Jan. 13, by taking part in the Akron Opener in Akron, Ohio.
