Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University volleyball team claimed its fourth and fifth indiviuals awards of the season as middle blocker Becky Jay was named both the Molten/NEC Co-Player and Molten/NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Over the past week, Jay helped guide the Colonials to a 2-1 mark while defeating both Central Connecticut State and Quinnipiac in Northeast Conference matches.
On Tuesday, Jay and her Colonial teammates took on Duquesne in Pittsburgh as they stepped away from NEC action. In the three-set contest, Jay would record five kills, one assist, two digs, and one block assist. It was the first time in in five games that she would total less than five blocks in a match.
As the team returned to NEC action on Saturday, Jay posted some career bests against Central Connecticut State. Jay's 23 attack attempts were a new career high while on the defensive side her four solo blocks and ten total blocks both tied career highs.
The following day, Jay would continue her offensive hot streak as she would hit .800 in the match against Quinnipiac. That percentage would be the highest in her career when she has had at least ten attack attempts.
In five of the past six games, Jay has contributed at least ten points to the Colonials' effort as the team has gone 4-2 in those games.
Jay has set new personal highs this season with 126 kills, a .270 hitting percentage, 107 block assists, and 118 total blocks. Her 107 block assists are the fourth-most by a Colonial in a single season as she sits only five more away from having the third most in a season. Her 118 total blocks are the fifth-most in a single season since the school began to track that category in 1999.
Jay and the Colonials will travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) for a mid-week contest on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Robert Morris will then return to the Sewall Center for a pair of NEC contests over the weekend as Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson will make the trip westward.
