Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's track & field squad continued its 2012 outdoor season this past weekend by finishing 13th out of 26 schools at the Colonial Relays, which were hosted by Williams & Mary University in Williamsburg, Va.
The Colonials finished with 29 points, ahead of the host Tribe (27), Pittsburgh (24), Mount St. Mary's (23) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (13.5). Michigan won the team title at the Colonial Relays with 167 points.
RMU was led by freshman Tip Worob (Denton, Md. / North Caroline), who established a new school record in 10,000-meter run thanks to a time of 31:46.49. Worob finished 13th in the event and broke the old record of 32:35.10 that former Colonial Phillips Thompson set in 2008.
Robert Morris also broke a school record in the sprint medley relay, a squad that consisted of freshmen Grant Kuiawa (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) and Malcolm Ayers (Clarksburg, Md. / Clarksburg) and sophomores Jermaine Dwight (Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham Township) and Dorian Rumble (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills).
The group combined for a time of 3:29.21, breaking the old school record of 3:30.31 that was set in 2001 at the Penn Relays and was good enough to finish fifth.
In other events for the Colonials, sophomore Shane Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) took home the individual championship in the unseeded portion of the long jump thanks to a final tally of 6.94 meters (22'9.25").
In the throws, junior Brendan Morales (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) earned bronze in the shot put with a final tally of 15.34 meters (50'4"), while junior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Milddetown Area) finished fifth in the event thanks to a throw of 15.19 meters (49'10").
The Colonials also placed two student-athletes in the top three in the discus, as sophomore Kelton Mehls (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) finished second with a toss of 44.08 meters (144'07"), while junior Charles Thurner-Diaz (Camp Hills, Pa. / Camp Hill) finished third at 42.72 meters (140'2").
Thurner-Diaz also posted the top mark in the hammer throw for Robert Morris with a toss of 47.68 meters (156'5") to finish ninth, while Ray finished 10th in the event with a tally of 46.20 meters (151'7").
RMU returns to action with its lone home meet of the 2012 season with the Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational Saturday, April 14, at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island.
