Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - The
Robert Morris University men's soccer team lost its season-opener, 2-0, to Cleveland
State at North Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.
Cleveland State took the lead in the 11th minute when Zach
Ellis-Hayden took a feed inside the RMU penalty box and played a short touch
back to Cristian Arboleda. Arboleda blasted a right footed shot from 16 yards
across the face of the net and inside the left post to stake the Vikings to a
1-0 lead.
RMU had a chance to tie the game late in the first half. A
through-ball by sophomore Devon Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / St. George's) set
senior Sam Colosimo (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) in behind the defense, but
the ball was just beyond his ability to control it. His touch, just off the end
of his boot, was collected by Vikings keeper Brad Stuver.
Coming out of halftime, a turnover in the middle of the
field by Cleveland State gave junior Daniel Calabretta (Brampton, Ontario / St.
Marguerite d'Youville) the team's best chance. Dribbling to right and just
inside the box, Calabretta's right-footed shot was wide of the keeper before
being cleared out of danger by a Vikings defender.
The Vikings put the game away after a corner kick was
cleared back into the corner. Admir Suljevic played the ball to the top of the
box where Mike Derezic collected it. He took two touches and then blasted a
right-footed shot through traffic and inside the near left post to make it a
2-0 game in the 73rd minute.
Senior Toba Bolaji (Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) finished with
six saves for Robert Morris.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Sunday, August 26, when
they host Canisius in a 3:00 p.m. game at North Athletic Complex.
