Moon
Township, Pa. – Coming off of its most successful season in
the program's young history, the Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team earned
votes in a recently announced preseason national poll.
RMU was
listed in the also receiving votes section in the preseason version of the Nike/Inside Lacrosse
Media Poll.
This
is not the first time the Colonials have been mentioned on the national scene
as they earned their first-ever national ranking in the Media Poll after
putting together a six-game winning streak during their historic 2012 season.
The RMU
men's lacrosse team registered a program-record 11 wins in 2012, including
running through NEC play undefeated to claim the league's regular-season title,
the first conference championship of any kind for the program. The Colonials
knocked off a pair of nationally-ranked squads during the campaign, including a
9-7 road victory at Ohio State, marking the first time they took down two nationally
ranked squads in the same season.
Robert Morris'
success in 2012 once again started with its record-setting offensive attack. The
Colonials scored 215 goals in 15 games, averaging 14.33 per contest, a mark that
allowed them to top Division I in scoring offense for the third-consecutive
season. As a result, RMU became the first Division I team ever to lead the
nation in scoring offense in three consecutive seasons since the NCAA started
keeping track of such records. Robert Morris has scored 652 goals over the last three
seasons, averaging 14.49 goals per outing in this stretch. Additionally, the
Colonials have topped the country in assists per game in each of the past three
years, including posting a program-record 9.80 helpers per game in 2012.
RMU head
coach Andrew McMinn
was named the 2012 NEC Coach of the Year in voting conducted by his peers as he
helped 10 of his student-athletes earn all-conference honors a season ago.
However, the Colonials have graduated a number of these honorees, including
three that were drafted into the professional ranks, as the 2013 squad will be
presented with the challenge of replacing these departures.
Robert Morris
is under two weeks away from opening the 2013 regular season as it will open a
campaign at home for the first time since 2008. The Colonials will host
Bellarmine Saturday, Feb. 9, to kick off the 2013 season.
