Box Score
MORGANTOWN, W.V. – October 16, 2013 - The
Robert Morris University volleyball team stepped away from Northeast Conference play for the final time this season as the Colonials traveled south to take on West Virginia University on Wednesday evening.
After shocking the Mountaineers last season with a five-set victory at home, Robert Morris (4-18, 3-3 NEC) fell at the hands of West Virginia (16-4, 2-3 Big XII) in straight sets; 21-25, 13-25, 19-25.
Becky Jay (Parma, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) and
April Krivoniak (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) paced the Colonials with seven kills apiece after the duo let the RMU offense this past weekend.
The Colonials would open the first set with the first to points to jump out to an early lead over West Virginia. The Mountaineers would then take the next three points and control of the lead away from Robert Morris. RMU would stay within striking distance of the Mountaineers and finally regain the lead with the score 12-11. It would be the Colonials' turn to hold the advantage for a run of play until it slipped away from them during a four-point run for the Mountaineers that saw RMU facing a two-point deficit, 21-19. West Virginia would not allow the Colonials to come back as the Mountaineers took four of the final six points to win the opening set, 25-21.
Robert Morris was unable to find its groove in the second set despite taking the first two points in the set. Those two points in succession would be the only time that the Colonials would record more than a single point before allowing West Virginia to side out and take the ball back. RMU relinquished control of the lead when the Mountaineers made the score 4-3 and continued to fall behind after runs made by West Virginia. Each time that the Colonials would record a point, the Mountaineers would answer with two or more points. West Virginia put away the set after two separate four-point runs, 25-13.
In the third set, the two teams would exchange the first six points before West Virginia embarked on a six-point run that dug Robert Morris a whole it was unable to get out of. The Colonials would try to make a comeback with a five-point run, but the streak only brought RMU within six points of tying the Mountaineers, 22-16. West Virginia would take the third set by a score of 25-19.
Ten different Colonials would record a kill in the contest, led by Jay and Krivoniak who each contributed seven kills. Defensively,
Melissa Bograd (Lemont, Ill. / Lemont) recorded a match-high nine digs while Jay had a hand in three of the team's four blocks.
Robert Morris returns to NEC action with just one match slated for this weekend. The Colonials will travel to face in-state rival St. Francis U. on Saturday evening. Currently, RMU sits one game ahead of the Red Flash in the standings as the two teams complete the first half of conference play on Saturday. First serve against the Red Flash is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
