Pittsburgh, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team earned their third sweep of the last four weekends, and fourth sweep overall, as they defeated Lindenwood this afternoon in College Hockey America (CHA) play, 3-1.
Robert Morris (11-3-0, 5-1-0 CHA) has won eight of their last nine games, while the Lions (0-12-2, 0-3-1 CHA) were swept for the fifth time this season.
Despite an even first period in shots (8 to 8), the Colonials jumped out to an early lead 10:15 into the game. Freshman defenseman
Mikaela Lowater (Thornhill, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) forced a turnover and quickly passed it to senior assistant captain
Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) skating down the left side of the ice. Imbrogno then slid the puck across the crease to sophomore forward
Ashley Vesci (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Lawrence Academy [Mass.]), who buried it past Lindenwood goaltender Nicole Hensley for her third goal of the season.
The assist on Vesci's goal gave Imbrogno her 98
th career point, moving the senior forward into sole possession of second place in that category of the Colonial career record books.
RMU continued to put the pressure on the Lions over the next 20 minutes as they held an 11-2 edge in shots. With a minute and 20 seconds remaining in second period, freshman forward
Brittany Howard (St. Thomas, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) broke a two-game point drought when he lit the lamp for her fifth goal of the season. Howard gathered a pass from senior captain
Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) and rifled a shot from the left crease. Hensley made the save, but the rebound trickled back to Howard, who carried the puck to the right side of the crease and scored.
Lindenwood pulled within one five minutes into the third period. Jocelyn Slattery forced a turnover at the blue line and skated alone towards junior goaltender
Courtney Vinet (Camrose, Alberta / Edge School), sniping one over Vinet's right shoulder.
The Colonials wouldn't take long to stretch their lead back to two. Just 23 seconds after Slattery's goal, junior forward
Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) beat Hensley on a breakaway for her seventh goal of the season. That goal was Vint's 45
th of her career and it moved her past Imbrogno in the RMU record books for third in career goals.
The Lions tried to cut the Colonial lead back to one, as they rifled off 13 shots at Vinet following Vint's goal, but the junior netminder made every save.
Vinet finished the game with 25 saves and improved her record to 3-3-0 as starting goaltender.
RMU also improved their record to 6-0-0 on Saturdays this season.
The Colonials will take to the road next weekend, as they face CHA foe Syracuse. Friday's contest is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. from Tennity Ice Pavilion.
