Moon Township, Pa. - Junior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) claimed a second-place finish in the javelin throw as the Robert Morris University men's track & field team competed in the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium over the weekend.
Carper's throw of 70.87 meters gave him the highest finish by a Colonial as RMU claimed six top 10 finishes in the throwing events.
Junior Steve Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) brought home two of those top ten finishes, placing in both the shot put and the hammer throw. Mitchell's toss of 16.09 meters in the shot put was good enough for sixth, while his eighth-place hammer throw was marked at 51.44 meters.
Senior Collin Ray (Middletown, Pa. / Middletown Area) placed right in front of Mitchell in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.51 meters. He also claimed another seventh-place finish in the discus with a throw of 46.54 meters.
In the track events, RMU was led by junior Nick Gentile (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport). Gentile placed ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.89 seconds, while his time of 1:54.60 was good enough for 10th in the 800-meter run.
The hurdles saw both freshman Mark Ayitey (East Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills) and senior Tyler Morton (Silver Springs, Md. / Springbrook) claim top ten finishes. Ayitey finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.29 seconds, barely nipping the eighth-place finisher Morton, who clocked a time of 54.60 seconds.
Senior Lance Washington (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) led the Colonials in the jumping events, placing eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.99 meters. Sophomore Richard Njenga (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) finished right behind him in ninth with a mark of 13.97 meters.
