Moon Township, Pa. – Junior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) of the Robert Morris University men's track & field team makes his first appearance in the NCAA Championships Saturday when he competes in the javelin at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Carper became the first male student-athlete in RMU history to qualify for the NCAA Championships after finishing 12th at the NCAA East Preliminary Round (5/24/13) in Greensboro, N.C., on the campus of North Carolina A&T. Carper posted a toss of 68.66 meters (225'3"), which ranks second in the Robert Morris record book.
The javelin for the NCAA Championships is slated to take place Saturday at 3:30 p.m. eastern standard time, and Carper enters the meet at No. 12 of the second flight. Each of the top eight finishers in the event will earn All-America First Team status, while finishing ninth through 16th earns the student-athlete All-America Second Team honors.
On the 2013 season, Carper has posted each of the top five distances in school history in the javelin. In RMU's season opener at the Wake Forest Open (3/16/13), Carper unleashed a toss of 70.87 meters (232'6") to establish a new school record in the event. That mark also stands as the top mark in the Northeast Conference this season.
Carper also won the individual title in the javelin at the 2013 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in West Long Branch, N.J., on the campus of Monmouth University. His tally of 68.60 meters (225'1") was good enough to establish a new NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships record in the event and helped him outlast Kevin Gilhuly of the host Hawks, who finished second at 66.16 meters (217'1").
A three-time All-NEC selection in the javelin, Carper became just the second Colonial in school history to win an individual title in the event at the NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, joining former Colonial Scott Fath, who won the event in 1993 with a toss of 53.78 meters (176'5").
Carper enters the 2013 NCAA Championships in possession of nine of the top 10 marks in school history in the javelin. He is one of four student-athletes from the NEC competing in the NCAA Championships, joining Mica Petit-Homme (400-meter hurdles) and Brendon Rodney (200 meter) of LIU Brooklyn and Errol Jeffrey (shot put) of Monmouth.
