Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University field hockey team started their final home stand of the season with a 4-1 loss to Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring in the sixth minute as a pass through the legs of goaltender Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia) found its way to the left post for a tap-in goal. Â
Less than seven minutes later, the Bobcats would double their lead over RMU as the Colonial defense allowed a Bobcat to sneak in behind them for a breakaway goal. Â
With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Robert Morris would cut the deficit in half as sophomore Jamie Hartley (Tamworth, Australia) netted her fifth goal of the season. Hartley's goal came off of a feed from Michelle Lewthwaite (Macarthur, Australia) as she spun around a defender and got a shot off towards the left post beating the Quinnipiac netminder. After three corner attempts as the first-half ended, Quinnipiac would pick up their third goal as the ball made its way around the arc before a pass from the far end line weaved its way through multiple Colonial defenders before a sweeping shot found the back of the net.
For the second half, both teams came out and provided some back-and-forth action that yielded three shots for each team. The Bobcats were able to capitalize on one of those shots with less than four minutes remaining in the game as they converted on a breakaway for their fourth goal of the match.
Of the Colonials eight shots-on-goal, Hartley pulled the trigger on four of them while attempting seven shots in all. Â On the defensive side, Sophie Watt (Sawtell, Australia) recorded her second defensive save in the season as she sprawled out behind McKenzie who made four saves in the contest.
Robert Morris will play their final home game of the season on Sunday as they honor seniors Paige Neat (Louisville, Ky.) and Erica Musson (Columbus, Ohio) before their Noon contest against Sacred Heart.
