Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex – Junior forward
Carl Reid (Kingston, Jamaica / St. Georges) tallied a goal and assist to lift the
Robert Morris University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Wright State Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials are now 1-1-2 on the season while the Raiders slip to 1-1.
Trailing 1-0 with just over 20 minutes left in regulation, RMU went to a more direct strategy on offense. The move paid off as the Colonials tied the game when junior
Devon Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / St. Georges) put a shot on goal from 20 yards out. WSU keeper Craig Feehan made the stop, but the rebound caromed to the center of the box where Reid knocked it high for his second goal of the season.
Robert Morris, riding the momentum from their first score, took the lead in the 77th minute. Reid was coming down the left sideline when he played a long diagonal ball into the box. Sophomore
Neco Brett (Kingston, Jamaica / Excelsior) was able to settle it on his first touch before putting a well-placed shot inside the left post.
Wright State struck first when Will Gbelee came up with a steal in the RMU end, feeding the ball forward to Chris DuPont. DuPont fired a missile from the center of the field that curled inside the left post, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.
Both teams generated early chances. Brett was denied from close range by Feehan 20 seconds off the opening kickoff and then watched another shot careen off of the left post. Wright State's Wesley Cain fired a shot from 15 yards that was corralled by Colonials freshman goalie
Joseph Kuta (Mississauga, Ontario / St. Joan of Arc) in the seventh minute.
Brett Elder missed a golden chance to put Wright State on top in the 26th minute. Sent on a breakaway with a through ball down the middle of the field, he was stopped by Kuta charging off his line. Elder then missed a wide open net on the rebound chance.
It was the Raiders Feehan who came up the big save just moments later, extending to his right to push a Williams shot aside.
Robert Morris outshot the Raiders, 16-13, for the game. Kuta finished the contest with three saves. Feehan had four for the Raiders.
The Colonials return to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 15, when they travel to Canisius for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
