Lock Haven, Pa. – Behind a hat trick from sophomore
Jess Martin-Brown (Mount Gambier, Australia / University of Adelaide), the
Robert Morris University field hockey team defeated UMass-Lowell, 5-1.
"The team played very well today. It was good to see us take shots and get on the scoreboard early," said head coach
Olivia Netzler. "UMass-Lowell had some moments that pressured our defense, but we were able to maintain our composure and never allow them in the game."
Martin-Brown registered all three of her goals in the second half. The first came in the 39
th minute, as the sophomore deflected in a shot from freshman
Chloe McIlwaine (Belfast, Ireland / Northumbria University). Martin-Brown then tucked in a pass from freshman
Simone Bindels (Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, NLD / Open Schoolgemeenschlap Bijlmer) in the 51
st minute to gain her second score, and finished the hat trick just three minutes later with help from Bindels and senior
Jamie Hartley (Tamworth, Australia / University of Newcastle).
Freshman
Harriet Brown (Salisbury, United Kingdom / Canford School) first put the Colonials on the board in the 10
th minute, as she tipped in a pass from Hartley for her first points of the year. Junior
Taleah Scott (Crookwell, Australia / Crookwell) then picked up her first goal of the 2013 campaign with an unassisted shot tucked into the low far post.
Junior
Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University of Queensland Tech) and sophomore
Emma Singer (Harrisburg, Pa. / Susquehanna Township) combined to give up one goal on nine shots. The River Hawks escaped the shutout in the 65
th minute as Chelsea Gillies found the back of the net.
RMU held advantages in shots (19 to 9), shots on goal (16 to 6), and penalty corners (13 to 6).
The Colonials will look for a weekend sweep tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when they take on Lock Haven.
