Moon Township, Pa. –
Junior Chris Carper (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona) of the Robert Morris University men's outdoor track & field team became the first male student-athlete in school history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday.

Carper qualified in the javelin by finishing 12th in the event at the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary Round on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

Carper unleashed his best toss in the third round, posting a distance of 68.66 meters (225'3").

Each of the top 12 marks qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which take place Wednesday, June 5, through Saturday, June 8, in Eugene, Oregon.

On the 2013 spring season, Carper has posted each of the top five marks in school history in the javelin and now owns nine of the top 10 distances in program history in the event.

Carper's performance Friday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round ranks second all-time at Robert Morris, trailing only his season-opening throw of 70.87 meters (232'6") at the Wake Forest Open (3/16/13).
