Moon Township, Pa. –
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse senior
Sean Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo. / St. Louis University) was selected Wednesday as one of 20 semifinalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award.
Criteria for the prestigious award include having notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character, and competition.
Meagher becomes the third Colonial to be named a semifinalist for the award, joining Kiel Matisz (2012) and Trevor Moore (2011). Like Matisz in 2012, Meagher hails as the only candidate from the Northeast Conference (NEC) and his 3.79 grade point average is tied for the highest mark among the nominees' available information.
The senior defenseman has enjoyed plenty of success both on and off-the-field during his time at Robert Morris. Last season, Meagher was named NEC Defensive Player of the Year after breaking a school record in caused turnovers (38) and tallying a career-high in ground balls (45). He finished second in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.53) and helped the Colonials lead the nation in that category (11.27 per game).
Along with All-NEC First Team and NEC Tournament Team honors, Meagher was also named NEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. A double-major in accounting and finance, the senior has been on the Dean's List every semester and plans on pursuing his MBA next year with the intent on sitting for CPA in the near future.
Away from the turf, Meagher has spent time giving back to the community. He's organized numerous events, including a fundraiser called "Gatorade Pong", in which proceeds went to benefit former RMU men's hockey player Chris Kushneriuk, who beat testicular cancer. Meagher also has visited with children of the Mooncrest Neighborhood Program, teaching them the sport of lacrosse along with helping them with their school work.
The list of 20 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. Those players will be put on a ballot distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore, Md. on May 24-26.
Robert Morris returns home this weekend for its first game of the 2014 season at the friendly confines of Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials host Detroit on Sunday, with the contest scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
