Colonials Finish Third at Spring Metropolitan Regatta

RMU compiles 60 points to claim third out of 11 institutions

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's rowing team continued its 2014 season Saturday by finishing third out of 11 institutions at the Spring Metropolitan Regatta in New York, N.Y.

The Colonials compiled 60 points to earn bronze, trailing only Marist (95) and Fairfield (90). Rounding out the field was Geneseo (39), Sacred Heart (10.5), Iona (8.5), NYU (5), Manhattan (2), Hofstra (1), Sarah Lawrence (0) and Stony Brook (0).

The first Varsity 8 earned third place with a time of 7:28.7, finishing behind Marist (7:19.9) and Fairfield (7:23.1).

The student-athletes to make up the first varsity eight boat for the Colonials were junior Laura Mooradian (St. Catharines, Ontario / Denis Morris) as the coxswain and junior Kristin Fay (Philadelphia, Pa. / Philadelphia), sophomore Caitlin Ryan (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Sutherland), junior Heather Hodges (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), freshman Erin Gunn (Buffalo, N.Y. / Holy Angels Academy), juniors Kelsey Porter (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and Brianna Hellier (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area), senior Megan Coleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Northgate) and sophomore Kelley Bittner (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton).

The second Varsity 8 boat also earned third place with a time of 8:04.2. Fairfield won that race with a time of 7:51.7, while Marist claimed silver at 7:55.2.

Serving as the coxswain of the second RMU varsity eight boat was sophomore Angelica Tomlinson (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade-Julienne). Also featured in the boat were sophomore Samantha Gunn (Buffalo, N.Y. / Holy Angels Academy), freshman Shannon Casey (Eagle River, Alaska / Frontier Charter), senior Gretchen Gailey (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area), sophomore Rebekah Noorlag (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver County Christian), junior Erica Sablofski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum), sophomore Paige Oster (Mantua, Ohio / Cuyahoga Valley Christian), freshman Tina Sahr (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Catholic) and sophomore Donna Muschar (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Perry).

In Varsity 4 action, the Colonials finished in third in both their heat and the finals, earning a time of 8:47.0 in the finals to finish behind only Marist (8:34.5) and Fairfield (8:42.0).

Junior Victoria Lomax (Willingboro, N.J. / John W. Callahan Catholic) served as the coxswain of the Varsity 4, which also featured Gailey, Bittner, junior Cassandra Grafton (Hartstown, Pa. / Jamestown Area) and sophomore Bridget Robinson (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern).

Keeping its undefeated season intact at the Spring Metropolitan Regatta was the RMU Novice 8, which crossed the finish line with a time of 8:21.0, over 15 seconds than runner-up Geneseo (8:36.5). Rounding out the field were Sacred Heart (9:04.7) and Iona (10:36.8).

Making up the Novice 8 boat for Robert Morris was freshman Olivia Bello (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) as the coxswain, freshman Katelyn Goodman (Altoona, Pa. / Altoona), Casey and freshmen Hannah Miller (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), Maddi Lewis (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom), Emily Engle-Young (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene), Taylor Andree (Erie, Pa. / McDowell), Lindsey Lose (Birmingham, Ala. / Hoover) and Taylor Childers (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee).

The RMU Novice 4 earned second place in its heat with a time of 9:20.9 and claimed fourth in the final, posting a time of 10:23.4.

Making up the boat was freshman Savanah Buhite (Oakdale, Pa. / West Allegheny) as the coxswain, Lewis and freshmen Hannah Miller (Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area), Rebecca Fiscus (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) and Tresa Rentler (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mount Lebanon).

The Colonials will take a week off of action before gearing up for the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, which take place Saturday, April 26, in West Windsor, N.J.
